William asks…
I write Christian lyrics and put vocal melody to them. How can I get my songs published?
I am trying to find a way to start a home business with my songs, but I’m not sure how to get the exposure. I don’t know how to play an instrument. I can only write lyrics and put vocal melodies to the lyrics. I have copyrighted 12 of my songs. Now I would like to get them published so that I can present them to Christian artists that are already established in the music industry, so that I can live off of the royalties. I would appreciate any professional advice or opinion.

Dean answers:
I am rather new to the industry, I must admit, but I would suggest just going on different artist’s sites that you know and contacting them. A lot of Christian artists have their own website and they have a contact me section. That would be a rather direct approach but it would be a way to get started.
As for a way you can get noticed is you could try going around to churches and see if you can find any bands that are trying to make it and have them play a show at a church or two to get word around, making sure that you get credited for your lyrics. Then some buzz might start to be built on that and you could get heard about by others.
You also could try asking to be advertised on a local Christian radio station. KLOV would be a good one to try as I believe they are nation-wide and I know a ton of people love that station.

Ken asks…
How do you get lyrics to scroll upwards in a powerpoint presentation?
Using power point 07.
want lyrics to be big enough to see them.
slow enough to keep with the song.
every time i try it stops at a certain point upwards.
lyrics are far past the bottom of the page so it only scrolls up about 10 lines.

Dean answers:
There is an animation style called credits. It will run through the entire text box, from beginning to end.
As for the speed, you should try setting the animation at the various speeds to see which works best with the tempo of your music.
Good luck!

Mark asks…
What are the best lyrics to explain not being able to get over an ex?
I have recently split up with my girlfriend and have been finding it really hard to get over her. I was hoping to find lyrics that can best describe that feeling. My ex is into grunge and drama/performance so if the lyrics could somehow relate to that it would be perfect. Thank you for the help.

Dean answers:
The best lyrics is to just move on…sometimes moving on makes the other person realise what they are missing, give her space and time, try not to complicate things , all she needs to hear is your words. No lyrics is romantic enough than your own and if she loves you she needs time to come back, if she does not love you then you are the luckiest man ever.

Donald asks…
How do you start writing lyrics?
I need to write 2 songs (lyrics, but chords optional) for a music assignment. I get ideas and write them down sometimes, but nothings really inspirational to me. I like artists like pink floyd, cat stevens, norah jones, nirvana, and black sabbath. What can i do to start writing (reasonably good) lyrics?

Dean answers:
Hi Bella,
Are you writing to a melody, or do you have free reign? Does it have to be a particular structure (verse-chorus-verse-chorus, etc), or can you do whatever you wish with it?
Here’s what I’d suggest:
The biggest hurdle in writing great lyrics is coming up with an interesting idea and angle to write about. The following info should help you come up with better ideas.
Step One: Decide what you want to communicate to the listener-
What do you want your listener to feel? Do you want them to sympathize with you? Would you like them to take some sort of action? Do you want to pick them up when they feel down? Play around with different emotions. Brainstorm ideas on heartbreak, jealousy, anger, addiction, whatever. Something will catch your attention.
Step Two- Develop the character.
After you know what you want to communicate, figure out who should do the talking. If you wanted to write about heartbreak, who would best get your point across? The person drowning their sorrows? How about the person who broke the heart? Maybe a neutral third party could describe what’s going on. Play around with different characters to see what sticks.
Step Three- Sketch the story
Think of your song as a three minute movie, and create a middle, beginning, and end. Let’s suppose you want to communicate heartbreak. Maybe you could structure it like this:
Verse 1: The scene of the breakup
Verse 2: Picking up the pieces after the breakup
Verse 3: Joining the monastery to keep away from women (but I am a bit twisted).
The idea is the hard part. Now the easy part:
1. Keep the story moving.
2. Don’t “tell” us how you feel, “show” us. Check out the following two verses:
I love you baby
I don’t know what to do without you
You are my heart and soul
And I love you
It’s three in the morning
I’m still staring at your picture
That’s sitting on the nightstand
Next to the ring I brought you
Both say the same thing, but verse two shows you whats going on.
Hope that helps!!
Chris
