Online Dating Scam – Yes or No?
Met an Aussie girl online; During the chat it comes out she works in an Orphanage in Lagos; We exchange photo’s; She looks good, but not a model. Trust me i’m no model myself. But after only 2 nights and maybe 3 chatting hours she falls in love with me. She’s cute, but seems too good to be true.
Who thinks in maybe a week or so she will have some “problem” requiring me to send money to Nigeria? How should I smoke her out without offending her if she is for real?

Dean answers:
100% scam. 99% Nigerian users are scammers.
If you want to confirm what I said, just give her money.
The only thing you need to do is to report the proof you get to the website customer service, they will help you. Generally speaking, that user will be removed immediately after their investigation. If you met her at free dating site, then block her is the only choice.

Army online dating scam?
I meet a soldier on a dating website. We have been chatting for over a month! He gave me his address and i even sent him acare package. He now asked me if i couldbuy him a satellite phone to stay in communication because he is in a remote area in iraq where there is poor access to phones! We do chat thru yahoo messenger! He claims his check goes straight into his retirement account and he cant access it. Could this be true, or is it another scammer? Does anyone know a Susan Tucker that supposevlry sells phones! Michael asks…
do you know of any non scam professional russian online dating site?
i am actually sick of prettiest girls trying to use me for a visa out of there.

Dean answers:
If you don’t want to be scammed.
Just remember a few things
relationship like any other way, takes time
mail order brides dont’ exist
dont’ pay on per mail basis

Thomas asks…
are there any non scam eastern european online dating sites?
i tried a couple after googling, and both turned out to be real scams

Dean answers:
I would have to partially agree with him, however, one must remember that if you find one fraud, entire country is not a fraud, it’s just a bad luck that you found a fraud person.
Just remember to NOT fall in mail order brides and you should be more or less ok.
Secondly dont’ pay for per email charges, per month subscription is enough

Donald asks…
What do you think about online dating scam?
I met a guy from singlesnet.com. He is an engineer from West Germany. His profile said he lives in Long Beach, California. When I talked to him first time he said he has to go to the airport. The next day he said he was in Florida. Two days after he said he went to England to buy a tool so he can go back to Florida to finish his assignment. He asked me for my address so he can send me flowers and chocolate. I was flattered. I told if he wants to give the gifts. He should wait until he comes back to California. He said he would come back before my birthday which is in August. Last night, he told me he has financial problem for buying the tool for the right price. It is very expensive in England and the tax is killing him. He needs to get this item before he go back to Florida. His customer has already paid $115,000 and he has finished the value of the job $55,000. He asked me whether I would buy him an Iphone. He cannot use his credit card before someone has max out his card. It is under investigation. He said the Iphone is only $400 not a big amount. I told him I am very tight with my money, I have a lot of bills and besides I have a reduction 20% on my salary. Then he asked if I could lend him $15000. He wouldn’t mind to give me back the money in double. I told him call his bank for help. If he has a business, he should get credit from his bank. Then he said it took too much time for the bank to fax the paperwork, and plus there are a lot of papers for him to sign. He just need this money for emergency. I told I can only give him advice, I cannot help him financially.
Then he said he might have to go to S. Africa to buy there. It would be a lot cheaper. Somehow I made an excuse, I have to go out.
I am just like to urge people if you are in internet dating site or chat room. Be careful those guys said he is working in S. Africa for a project. Some place out of the United States. I believe they are using the same thing try to rip innocent people money.

Dean answers:
Thanks for the warning…
Without your help I would have loaned a guy I don’t know $15,000 dollars…

Robert asks…
How to tell if I’m being drawn into an online dating scam?
A couple of days ago I was contacted by someone from Miland WI on the Okcupid dating site. He gave me his email address and like an idiot, I wrote him back. We went back and forth through a few emails them began chatting on Yahoo. The only thing I found strange at first was that his profile was only a few days old, but I hadn’t been on there very long either, so I let it go. Then I checked his Yahoo profile and it was only a few days old as well. I didn’t put too much stock into it until he told me he was in West Africa. He hasn’t said Nigeria yet, but I’m sure it’s coming. Then I went back to Okcupid tonight to recheck some of his info, and his profile is gone. My main question is wither or not this guy could possibly be legit. I’m not going to burst into tears or anything and he has yet to ask me for money, I was just looking or someone to talk to. Did I pick the wrong one? How can I find out for sure. I know he won’t tell me.

Dean answers:
Sorry, this has all the hallmarks of turning into a scam.
The fresh profile, it may have been genuine, people do join all the time, but in this case, and finding it deleted shortly afterwards, makes me think scam straight off.
West Africa, is the lead into the “I’m working here at the moment, I’m an engineer, telecommunications, space programme, nuclear scientist” line, followed by the ” the banks here won’t cash my paycheque, if I send it to you will you cash it and send it back via Western Union”

If you have a read through the forum in scamwarners, you’ll learn the signs of the love scammers. And probably find the same one.
Take care, there are genuine people out there, but not in this case.

Daniel asks…
is online dating a scam?
is online dating a scam? I have tried to use some of the many that are out there, such as Cupid, Match.com, and e-harmony, its not the cost that seems to be the scam, but it seems to be that you send a “note” to someone expressing interest it goes unnoticed, and yet the only e-mail feeds I have gotten of them are repetitious, and keep conveying the same message, from what seems to be a computer generating them.
am I wrong in asking if they are a scam? the only one I have had any ounce of luck with is Yahoo!
can someone help?

Dean answers:
I’ve used dating sites on and off for years…match.com, yahoo! Personals, udate.com, etc.
Realize a few things. One is if the person you contact is not a paying member (on a for-pay site) they may not be able to reply to your message. Read their profile carefully and see if there is a clue in there as to how to contact them off-site. I am now a paying member of match.com but for years I wasn’t. My email addy was in my profile (2nd line) in reverse…one out of 20 guys would contact me off-site. Most looked at my photos, sent me a wink or message, and then wondered why the got no reply (other than a wink at most, since that’s all I could do).
Next, people seem to forget their manners on the internet. Instead of remembering there is a real person on the other end of your typed words, they seem to forget that. You may contact them and if they are not interested, they simply may not reply at all. It’s rude but all too common. I do at least contact the person back, whatever method the site allows, saying “no thanks”. It’s not fun to get rejected but at least you know your message was received and the other party isn’t interested.
I’ve got friends who met online and are in serious relationships, and I’ve known of many more people who met their partner online and later married or were together for years.
Online dating is a business…yes there are some bogus profiles out there to draw in members, and I’m sure some sites are more reputable than others. However, there are plenty of real people making use of a tool that can help them reach millions of others they might never have crossed paths with in real life.
I like Match.com actually. Never used Cupid. I do not like eHarmony because they discriminate against homosexuals and non-religious (atheist/agnostic) people. The guy that owns that site is an xian minister I think.
Not sure what you mean re: repetitious email feeds. Never experienced anything like that.

James asks…
I joined eharmony.Has anyone tried eharmony and had success. Is this another online dating scam.?

Dean answers:
Your mileage will vary. For example, eHarmony has – by far – been the best online dating service for me. During my eHarmony days I met over a dozen of absolutely wonderful people. A friend of mine married someone she met from eHarmony and a recent study showed that 33,000 people married in a one-year period who had met on eHarmony. That’s an average of 90 people a day!
But on the other hand, many people have complained about eHarmony’s customer service and its matching system. Some people also hate the way the Close Out Communication feature works. It’s definitely one of eHarmony’s weak areas (and can cause some people to become self-conscious).
It’s not a scam, but like with any service some people will have great success and some people will have no success.
In the Sources below, I’ve posted a link to a place where people have posted their eHarmony experiences so that you can get more of a feel of what users are saying. I also posted a link to the news story about the study where 33,000 members married in a one year period.
Good luck!
